▴ Kiruna Church

Located in Sweden’s northernmost town, Kiruna Church is one of the largest wooden buildings in the country. Built in the early 20th century, its architecture is said to be inspired by Sámi goahti tents. Due to the town’s gradual relocation caused by mining activity, the church is also planned to be moved in the coming years.

After our visit to the cemetery we were due to have a driving tour of Buenos Aires before visiting the cathedral. This turned into a walking tour when the roads became too clogged as some had been closed for protests against the government. Argentina, eh? We still got to the cathedral in time to see the changing of the guards in front of the Mausoleum of General San Martín with the statues personifying Argentina, Chile, and Peru.

We're inside a dark cathedral with a close view of an alcove amongst the marble columns and stone walls in which there is a large sculpture protected by guards and watched by lots of tourists on the right with phone cameras up to record or photograph the scene. The general tones of the stone in the cathedral are warm but the sculpture in the background is a cooler, whiter stone. We can see two standing females in togas sculpted but their positioning suggests a third out of sight behind the tomb-like marble they're standing around. A huge flag of blue and white is hanging down and gathered in a tie to the left. There are five guards in front with three facing the monument and two facing in our direction. The guards are in dark blue with red epaulettes and collars and ceremonial shako hats. White belts hold swords.
