Moon Visits Sister Stars

Sometimes, the Moon visits the Pleiades. Technically, this means that the orbit of our Moon takes it directly in front of the famous Pleiades star cluster, which is far in the distance. The technical term for the event is an occultation, and the Moon is famous for its rare occultations of all planets and several well-known bright stars.

The Moon's tilted and precessing orbit makes its occultations of the Seven Sisters star cluster bunchy, with the current epoch starting in 2023 continuing monthly until 2029. After that, though, the next occultation won't occur until 2042. Taken from Cantabria, Spain on April 1, the featured image is a composite where previous exposures of the Pleiades from the same camera and location were digitally added to the last image to bring up the star cluster's iconic blue glow.

Markarian's Chain

This is a group of galaxies in the Virgo constellation. The brighter ones, including M84 and M86 on the right side, appear to be placed on a curved line. But there are so many background galaxies! I had the image annotated and while it did annotate galaxies that aren't in the image (because they are so dim) it show just how many of these are in there.

This is a target I wanted to shoot for quite some time. Unfortunately it's low, right in a light dome, and mostly obstructed by trees and houses. It just so happend that the timing was near perfect the last week, so all these constraints aren't as serve.

I've taken this one with my Newtonian telescope I'm still working on, While I did figure out the focusing issues and contrast there are still things to tweak and improve.

The Eta Carinae Nebula.

This was taken with the new DwarfLab Dwarf3 smartscope, one of which I recently acquired. I brought it to Australia with me on a current trip, and shot this Nebula from Bortle 6 skies, using the built-in Duo Band filter..This is 30x15 second frames, stacked and denoised within the Dwarf app. Mild saturation increase in Lightroom.

2nd evening #astrophotography, first time with a Sky Watcher mount, my new Sony A7 IV and Sigma 400mm. Still very n00by, but I was amazed seeing Saturn's moons Ganymede, Europa and Callisto! Having watched #theexpanse, I know exactly what'll go down there in a few hundred years... 😄

I then went to try and shoot nebulae from my balcony in Zurich - but got nothing but light pollution.
