The Cubanization of Servers: How Tariffs Might Freeze the Hosting Industry in Time
In the streets of Havana, American cars from the 1950s still chug along, lovingly maintained for decades despite their age: Ford Fairlanes and Falcons, Pontiacs and Studebakers, Bel Airs and Stylelines, as well as FIATs and Alfa Romeos, Mercedes-Benz SLs and Volkswagen Karmann-Ghias, and Soviet-era Ladas and Volgas.
It’s not that Cubans have an island-wide classic car fetish. These “Yank tanks” are the product of ingenuity in the face of scarcity. Cuba, under decades of U.S. sanctions, couldn’t import new cars or parts, so it preserved what it had.
A similar phenomenon may be emerging in the world of web hosting, where rising tariffs and global supply chain disruptions are pushing providers toward holding onto aging server hardware far longer than usual. The “Cubanization” of servers may be a looming reality.

#LaravelCloud just charged me $5 for an app with zero traffic and no hibernation. That’s it, I’m outtie.
There are many other competitors with a mature platform for PHP projects and better specs. Plus, their “Free” tier does well hiding the “+ usage” that is charged. If that’s how they play ball I’m not going back.
HomeOfficeLab Updates
RFC99 site rack is nearing completion (*rfc99-struct.rfc1918.host)
- waiting on a MB backing plate for Xeon-ICX GPU host #2 (eta zeitung)
- waiting on 4U chassis delivery for EPYC-Zen4 GPU / NAS host (eta frei)
- storage offsite: pick up Juniper EX3400-48T (zeitung)
- NTO (need to order): APC ATS 4500
- additional cable mgmt / routing (vertical)
Confluent events have required an aggregate necessity: rebuild the home office rack, finalize two additional system builds, swap out tiny switch + tiny router for regular IEC-60297 size equipment, move this and that and the other things around for reasons of rationality.
Trump’s Aggression Sours #Europe on #US Cloud Giants
Companies in #EU are starting to look for ways to ditch #Amazon, #Google, and #Microsoft cloud services amid fears of rising #security risks from US. But cutting ties won’t be easy.
Organizations appear to be reconsidering their use of these companies’ cloud services—including #servers, storage, and #databases—citing uncertainties around #privacy and data access fears under Trump administration.

@staff The above post: important for all who experience #spam #scam #bot attacks or #Nicole #fedichick and #admin #moderators #moderation of #Mastodon #instances #servers
@lindenshieldarts Here you can search #servers by character limits and language: https://mastodon.help/instances/en You can even try your topics in the 2nd field ("contain).
What’s your recommended #filesystem for #linux desktops and Linux #servers ?

Despite some goon sending this kinda pricey Ice Lake Xeon through international post, wrapped up in two thin layers of non/anti-static bubble wrap shoved into a Tyvek shipping bag (not a box!), it arrived yesterday and seems to be in decent shape after a trip from Australia to the middle of America.
So, what one does with a NOS (new old stock) bit of hardware which needs to be perfect in order to function, we inspect with macro photos and various image filtering methods to identify any potential flaws.
CPU: Intel Xeon 8370C
Spec: 32 cores, 64 threads, 2.8GHz base clock
Dimensions: my favorite general purpose lip gloss (sorta) tube for scale
I can't deal with this weirdly artificial 500 character limit any more, so sadly, I am going to have to move instances.
Recommendations for a new server, and what should I watch out for doing the move over?
I'm just going to put here Pattrick Kennedy thougths from ServeTheHome about the #BoltGraphics Zeus:
The big elephant in the room is NVIDIA and the CUDA ecosystem. That's is going to be really difficult to break without something that disrupts the market.
Some quick pics of recent day to day life, some project hardware, and some considerations on a new sweater (don't often wear red, kinda like it for the winter sometimes).
@dexter perhaps you recognize the GPU... it's installed as of this evening
Power flickered on and off causing some #servers to crash. Turns out my #ups has a surge protector side and a battery side. Cry. At least it got me to shut everything down and replug in and use my #thermalprinter to label everything. Odd thing is my UPS freaked out when I plugged everything in and started them again. #selfhosting
