@BernardSheppard
Thanks for the #NEM clarification even if you’ve just confused me somewhat as well :)

Nuclear power plants need not always feed energy into the grid. Nuclear reactions inside the core can be attenuated (control rods) and the energy derived from the cooling cycle can be dissipated to the environment (evaporation). They do this when needed to be refuelled, for repairs and maintenance when they are disconnected from the grid. Which of course defeats the purpose of building these monstrosities. Such off-line activities are not an issue for renewables energy plants since ‘generation’ is ‘distributed’ as multiple stand alone generators.

But if nuclear plant energy is so overpriced that it doesn’t get dispatched (postulating sufficient supply from cheaper alternatives) , what is the busines case for building them? Unless cheaper renewable energy generation is purposely curtailed in order to decrease supply to warrant nuclear plant energy to be dispatch (This is foreseen in Dutton’s plan - at an exorbitant cost to the consumers) , it makes no sense. In which case, #CluelessPotatoHead ‘s nuclear option is nothing but a #FossilFuel lobby trojan horse to ensure profits keep flowing into the coffers of #FossilFuelIndustry .

What’s so hard to understand here? The LNP wants TO RIP US OFF !!

@RaymondPierreL3 NEM Pricing is based on the lowest price in the bid stack, required to get the necessary energy dispatched to meet the current demand (it's a forecast, but it's near enough to real time to be actual demand).

Bids are dispatched in merit order - lower bids win.

That's why you often see negative prices in the middle of the day - solar earns renewable energy certificates that have value even if they have to pay to send energy into the grid, so will bid a negative price up to the value they'll earn from the certificate.

That means that nuclear will be bidding at say $300/MWh and won't be dispatched.

They won't be price setting.

Dutton's shiny new nukes will be sitting there, dialled down as low as they go (and they don't go that low), dispatching into negative prices, so having to pay to send energy into the grid.

Please, anyone with a better handle on the pricing system of our electricity, correct me if I am wrong about this.

NEM pricing is based on the spot market every 5 minutes based on the highest cost of producing elecritcity. Should Dutton’s nuclear wet dream be included, it being the costlier form of energy production, how could prices not increase?

If the AUKUS subs deal gets such bad press, why shouldn’t #NuclearDutton get the same treatment?

The changes to the Australian Energy Grid (#NEM) just keep on rolling on, on matter what the fools in the #LNP say or think! 😆 🥂

The most powerful #battery in Australia, and biggest single power unit ever to be connected to the country’s main grid, has completed the first stage of its connection and commissioning process, according to its owner #AkayshaEnergy.
“This massive milestone is a testament to teamwork and sign of the evolving connection landscape in the #NEM. It’s such an exciting time to be in this industry,” Nick Finch, the chief Engineer at Akaysha, said in a statement published on the company’s website.

“It has taken an incredible amount of collaboration between AEMO, Transgrid, Aurecon, EKS, Powin, and our engineering team. “
