#Palestine / IDF “Investigating” Potential International Law Violations in Killing of Hundreds in Northern Gaza
At least 16 strikes between October 21 and November 2 are being investigated by the IDF's General Staff Fact-Finding Mechanism. The UN estimates over 1,000 people have been killed in northern Gaza during the five weeks of operations
[…] The videos that flooded social media the day before yesterday (Sunday) were difficult to watch. In one of them, a young man in a white shirt walked along a row of colorful blankets and revealed the bodies wrapped within them. Under the blankets were also children, one of them wearing a pink shirt with stars. The young man pulled her hand, then the other hand in an attempt to make her sit up, but she collapsed backward when he released his grip. Dead. The video was filmed in Jabaliya in northern Gaza shortly after an IDF strike. According to medical teams in Gaza, at least 36 people were killed there when the IDF struck a building housing families whose homes had been destroyed.
Notable Incidents Under Investigation:
- Beit Lahia (October 28-29): At least 94 people killed, including many women and children, when IDF struck a five-story residential building housing about 150 people. October 26: 27 people killed in strike on Abu Sadek and Salha families' building. October 29: 19 people killed in strike on al-Louh and al-Masri families' building. October 25: 17 people killed in strike on Abu Rashid family home in #Jabaliya.
The UN estimates 75,000-90,000 civilians remain in northern Gaza. Aid organizations are prevented from entering northern #Gaza. Healthcare system in the area has largely collapsed. Rescue teams report difficulties reaching victims due to fuel shortages and safety concerns. While the IDF continues to claim these operations# target #Hamas infrastructure, international observers believe the continuous strikes, combined with aid prevention, are part of efforts to push civilians southward.
Should be a very quick and easy investigation one would think, but according to "Yesh Din" organization, only 6% of 664 cases examined by this mechanism before the current war led to criminal investigations. Only one case resulted in an indictment (involving theft of 2,420 shekels from a Gaza home).
