#DavidShaneLowry Calls for More Than a #LandAcknowledgement in Talk Hosted by Robert S. Peabody Institute of Archeology

by Christian Estrada and Tayla Stempson
Oct 18, 2024

"On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the Robert S. Peabody Institute of Archeology hosted a talk by David Shane Lowry, a member of the #Lumbee Tribe and an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Southern Maine. His discussion centered on settler #colonialism, the #LandBack movement, and the importance of returning #IndigenousLands to their original owners.

"In an interview with The Phillipian, Lowry urged students to grapple with #IndigenousHistory in the current era, not just the past. He expressed his hopes for Andover students not to shy away from uncomfortable situations.

"'You have to make Native and Indigenous peoples part of today. They can’t merely be part of events/politics/wars in the past. Every experience that you all at PA have with your local and national community ought to be to work to reverse the realities that allow you to live comfortably outside of relationships with Native and Indigenous peoples,' wrote Lowry in an email to The Phillipian."

!! This is by no means a direct commentary on the video !!

Just thoughts 'coming up' while viewing it. Questions I [JdeB] hope will inspire you to watch this long 27 min video.

When did 'we' stop thinking like a tribe and only see ourselves as individuals [that are ultimately selfish]
When did 'we' stop thinking and working for the future generations making use of the knowledge of the elder generations.
We tend to value ourselves with the wealth we generated for our own offspring instead of us as a community.

Decolonizing the Map: Creating the Indigenous Mapping Collective

“For far too long Indigenous peoples have been excluded from the map. We’re changing that.”
- Steve DeRoy, Founder, Indigenous Mapping Workshop

April 01, 2021

"Mapping is a powerful tool that holds stories. But who controls the narrative? Historically, maps were created by professional cartographers, many of whom played a large role in #colonization. These maps have shaped the way many of us see the world today. Of course, that begs the questions, who or what is left out of the map and how can that be changed?

Reclaiming #IndigenousLands Through Mapping

"For many Indigenous communities, mapping plays a large role in reclaiming their lands. Mapping is not new to Indigenous peoples, in fact, some of the world’s earliest maps can be seen in cave paintings or heard in the stories that have been passed down through generations. Today many Indigenous communities across #TurtleIsland and beyond use cartographic mapping to track #TraditionalKnowledge of their lands and waters. These maps can show sacred sites, the paths of moose or caribou, the best areas to find a particular species of fish, where to pick traditional medicine and much more. Maps are often used when major projects such as mines or oil rigs are proposed on Indigenous land; they illustrate potential impacts these projects could have on the environment and the communities’ way of life."

#Ute at #Utah State Capitol Today: Stop the #UraniumMill Poisoning our People

By #Brenda Norrell, #CensoredNews, Oct. 4, 2024

SALT LAKE, Utah -- "#WhiteMesaUte rallied at the Utah State Capitol on Friday, demanding that the deadly uranium mill in their community be shut down, as the legacy of #genocide, #ToxicDumping, and widespread #cancer continues.

"The #WhiteMesaMill in southeastern #Utah, owned by #EnergyFuels of Canada, is bringing in dangerous #RadioactiveWaste from the #PinyonPlain #UraniumMine in the #GrandCanyon, and the countries of #Japan and #Estonia. #Radioactive waste too deadly to remain at the #NuclearTestSite in #Nevada was dumped at the mill.

"'Today members of the White Mesa Ute community and supporters are rallying at the Utah State Capitol against #UraniumTransport and processing on #IndigenousLands,' #UnicornRiot reports on Friday.

I mean, if you want to volunteer to store nuclear waste at hour house, that's your business (and your neighbors). But too many times, it is stored on or near #IndigenousLands. I suppose deep underground storage could be a solution, but again, we're kicking the can down the road for future generations to deal with. Not to mention transporting nuclear waste to storage areas. Imaging how bad a rail accident involving that would be... @quixoticgeek @rmblaber1956

Today! No Haul! Uprising! #Hopi and #Navajo Host #Music and #Resistance in Tuba City

#NDN LIVE | Walk Against the Illegal Transportation of #Uranium on the #NavajoNation

"We are LIVE on Dinétah at #CameronArizona for the Walk Against the Illegal Transportation of Uranium on the Navajo Nation.

"On July 30, 2024 a uranium company named #EnergyFuels hauled its materials through the Navajo Nation and was stopped and escorted off Navajo lands by the Navajo Police Department by order of #NavajoNation President #BuuNygren.

"A call was made by Navajo Nation First Lady Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren and Diné organizers on August 1, 2024 to walk in opposition to the illegal transport of uranium on Navajo land at Cameron, AZ.

"The assertion of #sovereignty on #IndigenousLands by #IndigenousPeoples for the protection of land, water, life, and people is a major factor in this. The Energy Fuels’ #PinyonPlain #UraniumMine has affected the #Havasupai, #Navajo, #Ute, and #Hopi Nations by #contamination of land and water sources, illegal transport of uranium materials on tribal land, and existing without tribal consultation.

"The Pinyon Plain mine was built in 1990, but the legacy of US nuclear colonialism on Indigenous lands and communities goes back decades prior."

Alarm as miners seek approval to impact heritage sites without #TraditionalOwners ' consent

Giovanni Torre - February 29, 2024

"A #WesternAustralian Traditional Owners group has expressed 'profound disappointment' over a mining company's Section 18 application to impact two sacred sites, submitted without the group's content.

"The #Wintawari #Guruma #Aboriginal Corporation told #NationalIndigenousTimes that #EquinoxResources Ltd submitted the application without seeking consent or consulting with them.

"The #NativeTitle holders noted that the Equinox project is 'on the doorstep of the iconic #Karijini #NationalPark", and that more than 15,000 people have signed an online petition to ask Equinox to 'reconsider their plans to damage the area'.

"Wintawari said they only learned through the media that Equinox had lodged a section 18 notice seeking ministerial approval to impact an area of land that retains cultural significance to Aboriginal people throughout the #Pilbara.

"'The Wintawari Traditional Owners are extremely disappointed that Equinox is yet to meet with the elders to discuss their section 18 notice through an implementation committee to be established under an agreement between them and Wintawari,' a spokesperson said.

"Wintawari Guruma Aboriginal Corporation said that it proposed a meeting with Equinox in Karratha on Thursday, 29 February to discuss the section 18 notice, adding that the company 'has apparently rejected the opportunity to engage with Wintawari and the Traditional Owners through the processes provided for in their agreement'.

"The Wintawari spokesperson told National Indigenous Times that the Equinox CEO is not able to meet with WGAC to consult on the section 18 application because he has gone overseas until 8 April.

"'This indicates to #WGAC that they are not serious about consulting with WGAC about our cultural heritage concerns. It is beyond belief that Equinox Resources submit a #Section18 application without any consultation with the native title holders, in contravention of the state's Section 18 Consultation Policy and Guidelines, and then their CEO heads off overseas for six weeks making himself unavailable to discuss the serious concerns that the #WintawariElders have about their #cultural heritage being destroyed,' the spokesperson said.

"'It is astounding that a CEO of an ASX listed resources company can demonstrate such disrespect to the traditional owners and an appalling lack of judgement.'

[...]

"The Traditional Owners also noted that the Equinox project 'has potentially significant #environmental issues'.

"The project area is adjacent to the iconic Karijini National Park and a vital source of ground and surface water that nourishes the famous #HamersleyGorge."

#Colorado’s dirty secret: A $500 billion #mining industry built on #Indigenous land

A new report says that it’s only a fraction of the almost $2 trillion the state has made on #StolenLand.

By Taylar Dawn Stagner ● Environment, Tribes ● July 8, 2024

"Skiing, hiking, and other outdoor recreational pastimes have lent Colorado a woodsy — and environmentally friendly — reputation. This image is at odds with the state’s first and biggest industry: #MineralExtraction. From 1858 to 2022, mineral extraction in Colorado has amounted to a $546 billion dollar industry. The state remains one of the leaders in #coal and #gold, but the state is also home to #oil, natural #gas, #limestone, and #helium mining.

"Contrary to the carefree spirit of those outdoor activities that the state is known for, the growth of mining, and the development of its extractive practices, all have origins in the #genocide and forced displacement of #IndigenousPeoples native to the region. A new report by a nonprofit organization called People of the Sacred Land traces the history of how state and federal officials have 'systematically undermined Tribal #sovereignty and #Native self-governance through tactics like genocide and illegal land dispossession to exploit the wealth and resources of Tribal Nations.'"

[...]

"Starting in the late 18th century, a series of legislations established that settlers could not purchase land in the Colorado territory, but many settlers did so anyway, buying land from territorial governments and effectively excluding the tribes from the process. The report names #Denver, #Boulder, #ColoradoSprings, and #PuebloColorado as illegally established on #unceded Native lands. The United States was supposed to protect land belonging to tribes, but as settlers were drawn to the area via the gold rush, the United States failed to protect the land and eventually stopped trying, according to the report.

"In the mid 1800s, tribes were often removed from their land under the threat of violence, or coerced into signing treaties under duress to make room for more settlers, who were interested in the newly established Colorado Territory. But the tribes were never fairly compensated.

[...]

"Colorado’s long history of mining has contributed to #deforestation and water and #AirPollution. 'Mining is an inherently destructive and invasive process, and it continues to impact the surrounding land, water, atmosphere, flora, and fauna long after sites have been abandoned.' the report said. Even unused mines still pose a danger to the environment. Currently there are 23,000 abandoned mines that impair the water quality of streams in Colorado."

#UnitedNations: #Australian #Aboriginal children seized, '#GreenEnergy' impacts worsen for #Sami

by #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, July 9, 2024

"Australian Aboriginal continue to be seized from their families by the government, and the situation for Sami in Norway is worsening because of 'green energy' projects, Indigenous representatives told the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples today.

"Both #Norway and #Australia had country engagements with the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, but Australian Aboriginal representatives said conditions are not improving.

"During today's session, the second day in the week-long session, Sami told the U.N. that conditions in Norway are worsening for Sami, because their land is being seized for 'green energy' projects, including wind energy projects.
Sami stated that #ClimateChange is drastic in the #Arctic in Norway, far worse than in other regions, and that #FossilFuel industries continue to destroy Sami lands.

"Free, prior and informed #consent, as stated in the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (#UNDRIP), is not being honored in regards to Sami reindeer herders by the government of Norway.

"The U.N. Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples engaged in a country visit to Norway in March. Consultation, #EnergyLaw, and Norway's new #MineralAct, were among the topics.

"A representative from #Africa, responding to the report, said the impacts of green energy on Sami shows that the exploitation of Indigenous Peoples for green energy projects is a global issue. While #IndigenousLands are being seized for minerals, the minerals and products are usually exported, and are not of benefit to Indigenous Peoples whose land the minerals are taken from.

"Sami in #Finland said the government of Finland is violating the rights of Sami by failing to recognize Sami people.

"A Native representative told the U.N. that their Native hunting and fishing rights continue to be violated by the government of Canada.

"On Monday, Indigenous described how the murder of Indigenous Peoples continues in #Colombia, and there has been no relief from the violence from armed groups."

Diverse coalition urges 29-judge appeals
court to #ProtectOakFlat

#TribalNations, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Sikhs among broad coalition seeking to protect historic #NativeAmerican #SacredSite

By Becket Law, #ApacheStronghold, #CensoredNews
April 26, 2024

"Meanwhile, national polling indicates 74% of Americans support protecting #OakFlat. The Ninth Circuit ruled last month that the land transfer is not subject to federal laws protecting religious freedom. But five judges dissented, writing that the court 'tragically err[ed]' by refusing to protect Oak Flat.

"Including the 8 briefs filed yesterday, there have now been a total of 23 friend-of-the-court briefs filed in support of Apache Stronghold in this case, representing the voices of hundreds of federally recognized tribes, scores of religious organizations of diverse faiths, and leading scholars of Indian law and the Constitution. A full listing of briefs is available here. Highlights from yesterday’s filings in Apache Stronghold v. United States include:

· Tribal Nations and Tribal Organizations arguing that this case will set vital precedent for tribal nations across the continent.

· The Mennonite Church USA and 20 Mennonite conferences, churches and ministries explaining how the government can manage federal lands while still providing full protection to Native American religious practices;

· Religious liberty law scholars arguing that the plain language of federal civil rights law requires protection of Oak Flat;

· A diverse array of 38 religious and indigenous groups—including the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Oregon, the Southwestern Conference of the United Church of Christ, and the National Council of Jewish Women demonstrating broad support for Native American religious exercise from across the country;

· The Sikh Coalition, the Christian Legal Society and the Islam and Religious Freedom Action Team of the Religious Freedom Institute noting that the legal standard for judging Native religious liberty claims should be consistent with that for other land-use and prisoner claims;

· Protect the First asking the court of appeals to reconsider its narrow, inflexible approach toward Native American sacred site cases.

· The Native American Law Students Association pointing out the unique effect this case will have on Native American religious believers under the current interpretation of the law.

· The Multi-Indigenous Community Action Group, the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, and a Tribal Elder explaining that the court’s decision creates an unfair double standard for Native American religious exercise.

"'It is heartening to see a broad coalition of tribes, religious groups, and scholars stand up in defense of Oak Flat,' said Luke Goodrich, vice president and senior counsel at Becket. 'Our nation has a history of destroying Native sacred sites without consequence, and it’s long past time for that dark tradition to end.'"

Breaking News: Federal Judge Denies Restraining Order Filed Against Interior Sec. #DebHaaland by #Tohono #Oodham and #SanCarlos #ApacheNations

By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, April 17, 2024

TUCSON -- "A federal judge in Tucson denied a restraining order sought against Interior Sec. Deb Haaland by the Tohono O'odham and San Carlos Apache Nations.

"#Haaland is pushing another fake 'green energy' project, and bulldozers are ripping through ancient sites, ceremonial places, and medicine gathering places, for transmission lines to take wind energy from New Mexico to California.
Federal Judge Jennifer Zipps ruled on Tuesday that the tribes and others filing the lawsuit waited too long to file, and the Interior and BLM had fulfilled their obligations to prepare inventory and identify cultural resources.

"The pristine region of the #SanPedroValley in southern #Arizona, is the ancestral homeland of #SanXavier O'oodham, their ancestors #Hohokam, and #Apache."

#ApacheStronghold: Rare Request Gives Federal Court One More Chance to Protect #SacredSite

By Becket Law, Apache Stronghold, #CensoredNews, April 15, 2024

WASHINGTON - "A coalition of Western Apaches and allies today asked all 29 judges on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to protect their sacred site at #OakFlat from destruction by a mining project. In Apache Stronghold v. United States, a special 'en banc' panel of eleven judges split 6-5 earlier this year, refusing to stop the federal government from transferring Oak Flat to #ResolutionCopper, a foreign-owned #mining company that plans to turn Oak Flat into a massive mining crater, ending #Apache religious practices forever.

"Today’s appeal gives the full court one more chance to protect the spiritual lifeblood of the Apache people before the case goes to the Supreme Court.

"Since time immemorial, #WesternApaches and other Native peoples have gathered at Oak Flat for sacred religious ceremonies that cannot take place anywhere else. Known in Apache as Chi’chil Biłdagoteel, Oak Flat is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and has been protected from mining and other harmful practices for decades. These protections were eliminated in December 2014 when a last-minute provision was inserted into a must-pass defense bill authorizing the transfer of Oak Flat to the Resolution Copper company. Resolution Copper is a foreign-owned mining company that plans to turn the sacred site into a two-mile-wide and 1,100-foot-deep crater. The majority owner of Resolution Copper, #RioTinto, sparked international outrage when it deliberately destroyed 46,000-year-old #Indigenous rock shelters at one of #Australia’s most significant cultural sites."

#PrayerHorseRide's Third Annual March Ride Begins March 17, in Schurz, Nevada

Reconnecting and Revitalizing #Traditional Ways of Life Threatened by Destructive #Mining Resource Extractions Supporting "#GreenEnergy"

By Prayer Horse Ride, via #CensoredNews

SCHURZ, Nevada -- "Prayer Horse Ride "#NanesootuhinaPookooGoobakatudu," is getting ready to begin our annual ride March 17th-26th, from Schurz, #Nevada through Yerington, Fallon, Wadsworth and Nixon, through Lovelock, then Orovada, and ending in #PeeheeMuhuh (#ThackerPass in the McDermitt Caldera), in the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands of the #Paiute, #Shoshone, and #Bannock.
The Riders, walkers, and runners carry the prayer with each community. They'll move forward to raise awareness regarding lithium mining in Peehee Mu'huh and the McDermitt Caldera; AND also raise awareness to #CopperMining in the #PineNutHills, a holy place known to the #Nuwu; in honor and remembrance of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women / People (#MMIW/P) in Nevada; and to revitalize and restore cultural identity, languages, creativity, and supportive lifeways in our indigenous communities.

"Northern Nevada is the home of the #NorthernPaiute, #WesternShoshone, #Washoe, and #Bannock people. We, as descendants of them, will continue to give voices to the voiceless on #MotherEarth. To all of our relations.

"'We do this prayer ride to reconnect and revitalize our way of life,' says Josh Dini, Sr, a member of Walker River Paiute Tribe, #WaterProtector and #PrayerHorseRider, and a member of #AmericanIndianMovement Northern Nevada (#AIMNNV).

"Indigenous communities in the Great Basin and McDermitt Caldera are experiencing fast-tracked #mining and industrial development to support 'green energy,' and are threatened by #ecologically and #sociologically destructive resource extraction processes, most notably, #lithium and #copper mining, in areas in proximity to or within #communities, #reservations and #LandTrusts, and #SacredSites.

"#HeavyMetals extraction #poisons lands, air, and water. Sacred sites for ceremony, where ancestors are buried, where medicines grow, and where lifecycles are anchored, are destroyed.

"'Copper mining in our Pine Nut Hills takes away our knowledge and our identity of who we are,' says Dini, who explained the mining threatens an important Paiute medicine food, as well as numerous traditional campsites and sacred places that have been used for innumerable generations.

"'We ride in honor of the people on the land before extraction industries, past - present - and future. Here in Nevada we have places important to the indigenous culture that are considered America's sacrifice zones in search of 'green energy.'

"'We are Paiute and Shoshone allied with many of the federally recognized tribes in Nevada. We lead this prayer for Mother Earth,' says Gary McKinney, a Duck Valley Shoshone Paiute, water protector and Prayer Horse Rider, People of Red Mountain spokesperson, AIMNNV council member, and SIRGE Coalition Steering Committee member.

Prayer Horse Ride will visit #Indigenous northern Nevada communities affected by these issues including #WalkerRiver Paiute Tribe, #Yerington Paiute Tribe, #Fallon Paiute Shoshone Tribe, #Lovelock Paiute Tribe, and #PyramidLake Paiute Tribe. As Riders reach each community, they may share meals, engage in ceremony, share stories and songs, and teach and learn traditional arts, bringing the communities together to celebrate and remember the traditional ways.

"McKinney says, 'We ride to honor the land and the people - of the past, present, and the future. #LifeOverLithium."

"About Prayer Horse Ride: Established in 2022 to honor the late #MyronDewey, Water Protector, Paiute Shoshone journalist and drone pilot, and to continue prayers for cultural sites like Peehee Mu’huh (Thacker Pass), we are an indigenous led prayer group and community service organization that advocates for our indigenous communities, to protect what we have left and to raise your awareness to what our communities face, and most importantly, in gathering tribes back together to stand in unity, not by separation.

"'We'll continue this ride in the Vision of our Ancestors, for Healing, Strength and Awareness, in Prayer and Unity.'
