The difference in the dictionaries is striking. And I mostly read ebooks in foreign languages.
Verdict: I very much wished for loving the Tolino (home bias, cloud sync), I will buy the Kobo and might hack it to have DropBox support unlocked for syncing files.
Kobo
- Canadian/Japanese company
- Only one store
- Has Pocket integration (does half of "Send to Kindle", can not send arbitrary files, only articles)
- Can not sync files via "cloud", although DropBox/GoogleDrive seems to be built in but locked down in this model, might be hackable
- Good dictionary support, sub-word selection possible
- There seems to be a larger community working on hacks for the Kobo
- 50% more expensive than the Tolino
So I've ordered both a Kobo Clara BW and a Tolino Shine 5 and tested them side-by-side a bit. The hardware looks identical, the software has a lot in common.
Tolino:
- "European (German)" developed product
- Can use multiple (DACH) stores
- Nothing like "Send to Kindle"
- Can sync documents/books via their web based "cloud"
- Crappy dictionary, can not select sub-word text (no lookup of parts of compound words, sucks for German)
