So, generally #linuxMint cinnamon does a great job of staying out of my way. However I am starting to dislike Nemo, the file manager because it does not update the contents of whatever folder is displayed until I manually navigate out of and back into said folder.

Anyone know how to make Nemo actually, accurately show what's in the folder in realtime, or should I try to find a diferent file manager I dislike less?

GMs of the fediverse, I need your help! I'm trying to find a piece of software that will enable me to play my own custom music and sound effects online for the players in my TTRPG campaigns.

It needs to be linux-compatible, and let me play my own stuff - not stuff streamed from YouTube or any other site. Does such a thing exist?

Microsoft will officially end support for its most popular operating system - Windows 10 - later this year, on the 14th of October 2025 to be exact, here are 5 options on how to deal with this. For me it already has been "option 3. Ditch Windows completely", in favor of Linux Mint.

Another angle of security: It is time to create a "Euro-Linux" and to make its use mandatory within EU (esp. for government staff and schools). The development should be distributed among EU member states and their best IT departments (at the universities). The developers should be employed full time and Europeans.

#linuxmint could be a good starting point.

Finally (finally…) dipping my toes properly into the waters of #Linux*. I’ve gone with #LinuxMint as a beginner distro and so far so good.

*This is not exactly true. I did attempt to use one of the Red Hat products about 25 years ago and, well, let’s just say we weren’t the best of friends…

#linuxmint #linux Good afternoon folks. I have Linux mint now installed, dual boot, on my laptop. Resolved the issue with the mouse crossing to the 2nd screen.
New problem. The laptop is connected to the Dell monitor t. When I switch on the laptop it hangs at the Menu to choose operating system UNLESS it is also connected to the switched on DELL monitor. Switched off monitor/disconnected from the monitor it just hangs.
Suggestions please? The laptop is designated as primary monitor.

:boost_ok:

Ahead of Microsoft's plans to stop supporting MS-Windows 10 in October, and as I didn't want to install the extra-heavy and not so reliable Zindowz 11, I got rid of it and installed Linux Mint on the multimedia PC that I use on my TV (a small customised Intel NUC).
So far, it's just excellent, very stable, fast, easy to install and with a slick interface. 👍
What else?! 🤔
Linux rocks! 🤘

Trying to set a rule in my firewall and not sure if it's entered correctly. Can someone take a look to see if I have it done right?

lemmy.worldTrying to set a rule in my firewall and not sure if it's entered correctly. Can someone take a look to see if I have it done right? - Lemmy.WorldAccording to Brother (printer company) I need to set a rule for my firewall. brother printer instructions [https://support.brother.com/g/b/faqend.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hll2390dw_us&faqid=faq00100548_001] as you can see at that page it says : To scan using the Scan Key Tool, open the following ports in the security/firewall software you use: * UDP: 54925 * * TCP: 54921 I think I have it correct. but i’m new to linux and to creating rules in firewalls. [https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/77632e60-6888-4fad-b5b7-9d3b4eee9cd1.png] [https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/412070f2-d115-4f15-ae35-776035eba780.png] [https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/155c1d9a-f3df-4598-bcc5-8acd8d99f2ca.png] Those screenshots of how i created the firewall rule. I have the incoming set to “Deny” but I would assume that means that normally deny incoming BUT the rules I created should be exceptions. At least that’s how I would read that. If I am wrong please let me know. The important part is that according to the instructions ports * UDP: 54925 * * TCP: 54921 must be opened and allow incoming traffic. my end goal is to have the ability to push the “Scan” button on my printer/scanner and have a document scan and pushed to the computer. I am running Linux Mint 22.1 If you need more information to help me I’m happy to reply. The big item is : is the firewall rule created correctly?
