Jupiter RowlandI wanted to participate in today's motto of the Unseen Image Challenge. But I wanted to do so with descriptions of actual images. And it made more sense to complete a set of descriptions that I had been working on since last year (yes, I know that other people take only a few seconds to fully describe an image) than to make an entirely new image. However, even at the most limited extent, that would have meant one post, four images, twelve portraits, at least with no background whatsoever, with the same avatar in all twelve outfits, with a whole lot of similarities in the outfits and with always the exact same posture. Nonetheless, I had to complete the preamble and improve it in parts. I had to write a detailed description of the custom shoe design in almost 2,000 characters. And I had to describe four variants of the same sports jacket and five variants of the same button-down shirt (I've done one jacket and three shirts now). It takes me longer to describe one button than it takes most people to describe an entire image. And I'm talking about portraits of a 3-D virtual world avatar. In fact, I wanted to use this as a test balloon for which way of offering long image descriptions (not long as in 800 characters in the alt-text, but long as in well over 20,000 characters elsewhere) is better. I wanted to post the same images twice. For one, I wanted to do as I always do and add a block with the long descriptions of three images and twelve portraits in the post itself, below all three images. The description block would start with a very long preamble that explains everything and describes what the images have in common, followed by individual descriptions of each image. I know that this works technically, but it would inflate the post itself to way more than 40 times the size of a Mastodon toot, and it would put a whole lot of distance between each image and its individual description. Besides, I wanted to make complete descriptions for each image as HTML documents, include each image plus alt-text in the respective HTML document, upload the HTML documents to the file space in my channel and put a link to each document underneath the corresponding image in the post. This would have put the descriptions fairly close to the images, and it would have dramatically reduced the length of the post. But it would have been entirely untested. It may pretty well have blown up in my face. Besides, the descriptions wouldn't actually be where the images in the post are. And users of dedicated mobile apps wouldn't be able to read the image descriptions in their apps. Instead, tapping the description link would open the browser (provided what I plan to do works in the first place). Well, I had to nix this for today because there's no way I can get it all done within the next bit over one hour. Instead, I may use the two images of @<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/channel/juno_rowland" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Juno Rowland</a> that were the last original images I posted, combine their alt-texts and long descriptions with fully black images and correct the image explanation where it's actually factually wrong. The post with these images in them is from last year. That's so long ago that I guess nobody remembers it anyway, so I hope this doesn't count as cheating. I may actually post the "images" here on my Hubzilla channel instead of on <a href="https://streams.elsmussols.net/channel/jupiter_rowland" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">the (streams) channel where I have originally posted them</a>. Since there's nothing to actually see in the images, I don't have to be afraid of triggering anyone with eye contact. As for my new portraits, they will go on (streams) because they will contain eye contact. But I can't say when this will be. Die sind auch in der Bedienung ein ganzes Stück glattgebürstet und eleganter als Hubzilla. @<a class="" href="https://hub.hubzilla.hu/channel/pepecyb" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Der Pepe (Hubzilla) ⁂ ⚝</a> hat meines Wissens öffentliche Instanzen von sowohl <a href="https://nomad.fedi-verse.hu/register" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">(streams)</a> (die ist auf jeden Fall öffentlich) als auch vom nochmal neueren <a href="https://forte.fedi-verse.hu/register" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Forte</a>, das sich von (streams) nur dadurch unterscheidet, daß es komplett mit ActivityPub funktioniert, während (streams) noch primär das Nomad-Protokoll verwendet und ActivityPub zusätzlich. Wichtiger Nachteil in allen drei Fällen wäre noch, daß es keine Smartphone-Apps gibt und du aufs Webinterface angewiesen bist. Jupiter RowlandWhen Mastodon introduces groups, it had better also introduce a strikingly big "Groups" button to its Web interface and the official iOS and Android apps. And the major third-party phone apps had better follow suit as soon as possible. Otherwise the majority of Mastodon users won't even know that the Fediverse has groups (it does right now, and they don't right now), much less that Mastodon has introduced them. And they'll go on shouting into the void like they've always done, hoping that the right people may happen upon their posts. I mean, Mastodon has also copied Friendica's, Hubzilla's and (streams)' automatic, reader-side content warning generation into its existing filters and rolled that feature out with Mastodon 3.0 in October, 2022. But next to nobody on Mastodon even knows that this feature exists anywhere in the Fediverse, much less on Mastodon itself. For the huge majority, putting content warnings into the summary field (of which next to nobody on Mastodon knows that it's actually a summary field) and forcing the very same content warnings on everyone in the Fediverse is without an alternative. As is demanding that the very same content warnings that one requires oneself be forced upon everyone else while oneself be spared from all other content warnings. And, in fact, it also seems like hardly anyone on Mastodon knows that you can follow hashtags on Mastodon, just like you can follow people. Altering the source code of the post is necessary because Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte neither have a dedicated alt-text field, nor are images file attachments there. Rather, images are embedded directly into the post, in-line, just the same way blogs handle images. And alt-text has to be woven into the image-embedding code in the post. Thus, the post itself has to be altered. So, assuming AltBot actually manages to circumvent the two most advanced permissions systems in the Fediverse, it would have to trace back an image that it perceives as a file attachment to where exactly the embedding code for that particular image is in the post. It would have to be able to both understand and write the specific flavour of BBcode used by Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte. (By the way: The alt-text example is genuine. I've actually used it. And it's an extremely whittled-down version of the long image description of the same image in the post itself, a description which has to be the longest in the entire Fediverse.) Oder störst du dich daran, wenn du längere Posts auf Mastodon siehst, egal, woher sie kommen? Bedenke: Das Fediverse ist nicht nur Mastodon. Das Fediverse wurde auch nicht mit Mastodon erfunden. Das Fediverse war zu keinem Zeitpunkt nur Mastodon. Schon als Mastodon mit seinem 500-Zeichen-Limit im Januar 2016 startete, verband es sich sofort mit Friendica, einer "Besser als Facebook"-Facebook-Alternative mit vollen Blogging-Features, die seit Juli 2010 existierte, damals schon seine eigene florierende Kultur basierend auf seiner eigenen Technologie hatte und ein Limit von 200.000 Zeichen hat. Ebenso verband sich Mastodon sofort mit dem Friendica-"Nachfolger" Hubzilla von März 2015, dessen Limit bei über 16 Millionen Zeichen liegt. Du siehst auf Mastodon also nicht nur Mastodon-Tröts, sondern durchaus auch Content von anderen Plattformen und Serveranwendungen mit anderem Fokus, anderer Technologie, anderer Philosophie, anderer Kultur. Das können Blogposts von WordPress, WriteFreely oder Plume genauso sein wie mittellange Posts von Pleroma, Akkoma, Misskey, Iceshrimp oder Sharkey oder auch noch längere Posts von Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) oder Forte. Und nirgendwo wird sich jemand auf das beschränken, was Mastodon "kann", nur weil der eigene Content vielleicht auf Mastodon landen und da die Microblogging-Puristen stören könnte. Wenn du aber Mastodon unbedingt als puristischen reinen Microblogging-Dienst haben willst mit nie mehr als 500 Zeichen und auch sonst nichts, was Vanilla-Mastodon selbst nicht kann, dann wirst du sehr viel zu blockieren haben. Nicht nur Nutzer, sondern tausende ganze Domains. Aber: Das Medium ist nicht Mastodon. Das Medium ist das Fediverse. Und das Fediverse ist nicht nur Mastodon, war es nie und wird es auch nie werden. Jupiter Rowland@<a href="https://mastodon.world/@crabby" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">crabby</a> Zufällig habe ich <a href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/articles/jupiter_rowland/0a75de76-eb27-4149-b708-f20b2f79d392" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">ein paar selbstgemachte Tabellen</a> zur Hand, die Mastodon mit <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/Friendica" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Friendica</a>, <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/Hubzilla" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hubzilla</a> und <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/(streams)" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">(streams)</a> vergleichen. @<a href="https://troet.cafe/@andreas_heitmann" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">AndyGER :verified_coffee:</a> Zumindest die letzteren zwei genannten plus der jüngste Sprößling der Familie, <a href="https://codeberg.org/fortified/forte" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Forte</a>, sind Mastodon technologisch schon längst um Lichtjahre voraus. Hubzilla war schon 2012 fortschrittlicher, als Mastodon es heute ist, und da hieß es noch gar nicht Hubzilla. Auf Mastodon sind Login, Konto, Identität und Profil alles eins. Auf Hubzilla, (streams) und Forte kann man auf einem einzigen Konto mehrere völlig unabhängige Identitäten haben, die für Mastodon wie separate Konten aussehen. Friendica und Hubzilla bieten dann auch noch mehrere Profile pro Identität. Auf Mastodon ist es heute noch schwierig, ein Konto umzuziehen. Das komplette Konto mit allem umzuziehen, ist gar unmöglich. Auf Hubzilla, (streams) und Forte kann man dagegen sogar seine Kanäle gleichzeitig und voll synchron zueinander auf mehreren Servern haben. Das nennt sich "<a href="https://help.hubzilla.hu/benutzerhandbuch/klonen.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">nomadische Identität</a>". <a href="https://help.hubzilla.hu/benutzerhandbuch/berechtigungen_kanalrollen.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hubzillas Berechtigungssystem</a> wird eigentlich nur noch knapp von dem von (streams) und Forte übertroffen. Mastodon weiß gar nicht, was Berechtigungen sind. Hubzilla hat schon 2020 OpenWebAuth Magic Single Sign-On von seinem eigenen Fork Zap geerbt, und zwar als serverseitige und clientseitige Implementation. (streams) und Forte hatten es von vornherein. Auf Mastodon gab es mal einen Versuch, zumindest clientseitiges OpenWebAuth zu implementieren. Es gibt tatsächlich einen Pull Request. Der ist aber nie gemerget worden und wurde wahrscheinlich sogar abgelehnt. Mastodon kennt nur das supervereinfachte Threadmodell von Twitter. Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) und Forte beherrschen dagegen echte Konversationen wie Facebook, wie jedes Blog usw. mit einem (1) Post und ansonsten Kommentaren. Und die vier zeigen dir auch standardmäßig immer sofort ganze Threads an und nicht irgendwelches Stückwerk. Was auf Mastodon harte Arbeit erfordert oder überhaupt nicht möglich ist, servieren dir die vier auf dem Silbertablett. Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) und Forte haben allesamt schon immer Gruppen/Foren implementiert, inklusive Moderation, inklusive dem Benennen zusätzlicher Admins (auf Friendica nur vom selben Node), inklusive privaten Gruppen/Foren, inklusive der Möglichkeit, Gruppen/Foren in Verzeichnissen nicht anzeigen zu lassen, inklusive der Möglichkeit, neue Mitglieder von den Admins erst bestätigen zu lassen. Noch dazu sind die Gruppen/Foren von allen vieren untereinander kompatibel und mit allen möglichen anderen Gruppenakteuren im Fediverse. Mastodon versucht erst jetzt gerade, irgendwie eine Gruppenfunktion einzubauen, und wie die aussehen wird, wissen anscheinend nicht mal die Entwickler. Wenn du auf Mastodon Bilder oder andere Medien postest, gehen nur maximal vier pro Tröt. Und auch nur als Dateianhänge unter dem eigentlichen Tröt. Noch dazu versickern sie irgendwo auf dem Server. Auf Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) und Forte hast du keine Begrenzung in der Anzahl. Du kannst Bilder und andere Medien im Post einbetten wie auf einem Blog. Und du hast einen eingebauten Cloudspeicher mit Unterordnern und Berechtigungen, in dem du Bilder, Medien usw. hochladen kannst, auch zum Einbetten in Posts. Auf Hubzilla, (streams) und Forte hat der Cloudspeicher sogar WebDAV-Anbindung. Von den Features her kann das heutige Mastodon schon mit Friendica auf dem Stand von 2010 nicht mithalten, als es noch Mistpark hieß. Bis hin zu Quote-Posts, die es meines Wissens damals schon hatte. Im Grunde hat nur Mastodon die nicht. Wenn Mastodon-Nutzer sich für Mastodon (oder gar fürs "Fediverse") neue Features wünschen, gehören die im allgemeinen in zwei Kategorien: Entweder sind die technisch überhaupt nicht umsetzbar, oder mindestens ein oder zwei von den vieren haben das schon längst implementiert. Du kannst auch als Admin einer Einzelnutzer-Mastodon-Instanz nicht einstellen, daß deine Tröts ab jetzt und für immer nur und ausschließlich auf Mastodon zu sehen sein werden, nicht aber auf Glitch, Hometown, Ecko, Pleroma, Akkoma, Misskey, Calckey, Firefish, Iceshrimp-JS, Iceshrimp.NET, CherryPick, Sharkey, Catodon, GoToSocial, Mitra, Socialhome, Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams), Forte, Pixelfed, Lemmy, /kbin, Mbin, PieFed, Sublinks etc. etc. Übrigens: (streams) und Forte haben tatsächlich so eine Funktion. Das nennt sich Uafilter, also User Agent Filter. Als Admin kann man bestimmte User Agents blocklisten. Ob es auch eine Allowlist gibt, da bin ich mir nicht sicher. Eigentlich hat Mike Macgirvin sie entwickelt, um Threads serverweit auszusperren, ohne ständig neue Domains und Adressen eintragen zu müssen. Nebeneffekt ist, daß damit auch ganze dezentrale Fediverse-Serveranwendungen auf einen Schlag blockiert werden können. Mit einem Federstreich könnte ein (streams)- oder Forte-Admin beispielsweise nicht nur alle über 10.000 gegenwärtigen Mastodon-Instanzen blockieren, sondern auch alle zukünftigen. Alle. Denn kaum einer dürfte sich die Mühe machen, den User Agent seiner Instanz umzubauen, um etwas zu umgehen, wovon keine Sau weiß, daß es existiert. Wenn es auch eine Allowlist gibt (bis auf NSFW haben Filter auf Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) und Forte generell eine Blocklist und eine Allowlist), dann könnte man mit drei Einträgen alles aussperren, was nicht Hubzilla, (streams) oder Forte ist (jedenfalls, sofern (streams) tatsächlich einen immer einheitlichen User Agent hat). B. Akkoma oder Calckey oder Friendica oder Hubzilla sind. Wenn ein Mastodon-Nutzer nicht nur "Fediverse" und "Mastodon" gleichbedeutend verwendet, sondern felsenfest darauf beharrt, daß das Fediverse Mastodon, nur Mastodon und nichts als Mastodon ist: <ul><li>Mastodon-Nutzer sagen: "Ist doch scheißegal!" Die stört das überhaupt nicht.</li><li>Einer, der schon seit zehn Jahren Friendica daily-drivet, stößt besagtem Mastodon-Nutzer erstmal Bescheid und klärt ihn gründlich darüber auf, was das Fediverse wirklich ist.</li><li>Das wiederum ist etwas, woran sich alle Mastodon-Nutzer stören, die das mitbekommen.</li></ul> Nicht-Mastodon-Nutzer werden im Fediverse regelrecht systematisch diskriminiert. Mastodon-Nutzer bekommen von dieser Diskriminierung natürlich nichts mit. Sie werden ja nicht diskriminiert, und für sie fühlt sich das alles nicht diskriminierend an. Also behaupten sie steif und fest, nein, Nicht-Mastodon-Nutzer werden im Fediverse nicht diskriminiert. Und zwar, während sie selbst Nicht-Mastodon-Nutzer diskriminieren. Falls das alles noch zu abstrakt ist: Das ganze Fediverse als "Mastodon" zu bezeichnen, ist diskriminierend gegenüber dem Nicht-Mastodon-Fediverse. <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki/Friendica" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Friendica</a> oder <a href="https://joinfediverse.wiki" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Hubzilla</a> ist nicht nur nicht Mastodon, sondern es ist ziemlich extrem nicht Mastodon. Nicht-Mastodon-Nutzer dazu zu zwingen, die Mastodon-Kultur zu übernehmen und dafür die Kultur der Software, die sie selbst benutzen, ebenso aufzugeben wie auch schon mal über 90% der Features dieser Software (weil diese Features in der Mastodon-Kultur nicht vorkommen oder gar der Mastodon-Kultur widersprechen), ist diskriminierend gegenüber dem Nicht-Mastodon-Fediverse. Von Nicht-Mastodon-Nutzern zu fordern, daß sie alle ihre Posts und Kommentare auf maximal 500 Zeichen beschränken, ist diskriminierend gegenüber dem Nicht-Mastodon-Fediverse. (Ist @<a href="https://moppels.bar/@crossgolf_rebel" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">crossgolf_rebel - kostenlose Kwalitätsposts</a> so passiert. Und zwar mit der Aufforderung, daß er sich andernfalls aus dem Fediverse verpissen soll.) Nicht-Mastodon-Nutzern Textformatierung zu verbieten, weil Textformatierung im Microblogging/auf Mastodon nichts verloren hat, ist diskriminierend gegenüber dem Nicht-Mastodon-Fediverse. Friendica-, Hubzilla-, (streams)- oder Forte-Nutzern nicht nur vorzuschreiben, daß sie im Zusammenfassungsfeld Inhaltswarnungen eintragen sollen, sondern ihnen auch vorzuschreiben, daß sie im Zusammenfassungsfeld nur Inhaltswarnungen einzutragen haben und keine Zusammenfassungen, ist genauso diskriminierend, wie ihnen zu verbieten, mehr Hashtags zu setzen, als auf Mastodon "normal" wären, auch wenn sie damit eine sehr viel bessere CW-Lösung auslösen wollen. Auch wenn man auf einen Post antwortet, der einen nicht erwähnt, von jemandem, dem man nicht folgt, und dann dafür bestraft wird, ist das auch diskriminierend. Denn außerhalb von Mastodon gibt es etwas, das nennt sich "Konversationen". Da sieht man immer ganze Threads auf einmal, inklusive Antworten, die einen nicht erwähnen, von Leuten, denen man nicht folgt. Aus Mastodon-Sicht mag das wie ein Bug oder eine entwicklerische Fehlentscheidung wirken. Aus Nicht-Mastodon-Sicht ist das aber genau so, wie es eigentlich gehört. Generell ist jeglicher Versuch, das ganze Fediverse dazu zu zwingen, nur Mastodon zu sein oder zumindest wie nur Mastodon auszusehen und sich wie nur Mastodon anzufühlen, diskriminierend gegenüber dem Nicht-Mastodon-Fediverse. Genau das machen aber die, die sich total dran gewöhnt haben, daß das Fediverse nur Mastodon ist. Ich meine, drehen wir den Spieß mal um. Stellen wir uns mal vor, du hast mal sehr viel auf einmal zu sagen. Also haust du einen ganzen Thread raus mit acht durchnumerierten Tröts. So, jetzt kommt @<a href="https://loma.ml/profile/feb" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Matthias</a> (Friendica, 200.000 Zeichen, ist schon fünfeinhalb Jahre länger im Fediverse als Mastodon) an und schnauzt dich an, was dir denn einfällt, seinen Lesefluß mit dieser Schnipselei zu stören. Du sollst das gefälligst alles in einen Post packen, wie sich das gehört. Die Rechtfertigung: Friendica ist eben schon länger im Fediverse als Mastodon, also hat Friendica viel eher das Sagen als Mastodon. Oder du trötest irgendwas mit sensiblem oder unangenehmem Inhalt. Natürlich setzt du brav eine CW im CW-Feld. Und dann kommt jemand von Friendica oder Hubzilla oder (streams) oder Forte an und mault dich an, was diese Scheiße in der Zusammenfassung zu suchen hat und wieso da keine tatsächliche Zusammenfassung des Post ist. Und wieso du keine Hashtags gesetzt hast, die bei demjenigen das NSFW auslösen können. Oder du antwortest auf etwas, was auch schon eine Antwort ein ganzes Stück tief in einem Thread ist. Natürlich erwähnst du acht Leute. Und dann kommt jemand von Friendica oder Hubzilla oder (streams) oder Forte an und motzt herum, weil dein Kommentar vor lauter Erwähnungen unlesbar ist. Oder du antwortest in einem öffentlichen Thread, aber du willst lieber privat antworten. Also setzt du die Antwort auf privat. Und dann kommt einer von Hubzilla oder (streams) oder Forte, der dem Thread auch folgt, und schnauzt dich an, was dir denn einfällt zu versuchen, mitten in der Konversation die Berechtigungen zu ändern. Du bist dir natürlich keinerlei Schuld bewußt. Du tust nur, was auf Mastodon normal ist und was von der Mastodon-Kultur entweder abgesegnet ist oder gar eingefordert wird. Und so empfindest du das Verhalten als übergriffig und diskriminierend. Derjenige aber fordert nur die Beachtung der Kultur und Technologie der Serveranwendung ein, die er selbst nutzt.
