Jamez Barrett 🜃 ॐ Ⓐ<p>The Story of Bryan Cook and Inner City 90s Sydney</p><p>Inner city Sydney in the 1980s and 90s was a very special place. I first spent extended amounts of time in Newtown from 1991. The creativity and energy of the community was amazing. Music, art, performance and writing as well as dancing, singing, sculpting and raving were happening everywhere. Large loft-style warehouse spaces could be rented for a few hundred dollars a week and large groups could live in them too. I moved permanently to Sydney in late 1992 and the city was my base until late 1999. The city has changed a lot since then and on my first and only visit back since, in 2023, it was almost unrecognisable.<br>This is the story of Bryan Cook. A local inner city photographer and Australian independent music lover who captured some of the most unique, unseen photos around the inner city pubs like The Hopetoun, The Vulcan, The Sydney Trade Union Club The Evening star, The Strawberry Hills Hotel and more.</p><p><a href="https://soulvlog.blogspot.com/2025/02/the-story-of-bryan-cook-and-inner-city.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">soulvlog.blogspot.com/2025/02/</span><span class="invisible">the-story-of-bryan-cook-and-inner-city.html</span></a><br> <a href="https://c.im/tags/Australia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Australia</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/Sydney" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sydney</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/PunkRock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PunkRock</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/MyHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MyHistory</span></a></p>

Jamez Barrett 🜃 ॐ Ⓐ<p>"Bringing up the rear comes ‘The Human Hand’ by 6 Magik 9. A fetching black ‘n’ silver tyre track designed sleeve encloses a firm favourite and seemingly the black (electric) sheep of the family, inasmuch as psych and folk are discarded for a bout of tape collagism and frayed mind distortion. More punning wordplay (‘Udder Worldly’) and scriptural pick’n’mixing (‘Onan Rides the Whale’) is aligned to prominent, viscous bassings alongside ghostly breaths of woodwind. One number even suggests Dixieland 78s interpreted by a tribe of pygmies. This sister disc to their ‘In Mara’s Glove’ debut (previously on Foxglove) pencils in a link to the family trees of great lost fellow countrymen Gum, Loop Orchestra and The Laughing Hands." - Steve Pescott in Terrascope (2006)</p><p><a href="https://freemusicarchive.org/music/6majik9/The_Human_Hand" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">freemusicarchive.org/music/6ma</span><span class="invisible">jik9/The_Human_Hand</span></a></p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/downloads" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>downloads</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/myhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>myhistory</span></a></p>
Jamez Barrett 🜃 ॐ Ⓐ<p>In Mara's Glove - 6majik9 (2005)</p><p>( I was part of this mission)</p><p>More primitive dirt psych explorations from the masters of the australian outback. Majik is the fully assembled ensemble encompassing almost-all the members of the musicyourmindwilllove you collective. Space shanty rhythms collide with tribal folk dirges to create true cosmic wreckage. Michael Donnelly and co are on a mission to find the perfect trip. Their cathartic releases are spewed straight from the earth’s core. This is the aural transfixing of melted rock and the hyperspace freeway. A total psychedelic journey. Welcome to fucking oz.Stephen Clover: "Though I've met them, I've no real idea who they are or which planet they came from. I've seen them live — twice, in fact, in the same weekend — and I've never heard or seen anything like it; never borne witness to such musical lunacy. I've also never heard anything contemporary that reminds me more of Can. But where, in the case of the kraut masters, you might expect — and generally will receive — precision and economy of gesture and deed, "Majik" (the 6 and 9 are silent, dig) can happily provide the opposite. It's as if they's some kinda barely-competent wedding band formed by members of Amon Düül I and who turn up late, fucked-up, and proceed to attempt Can covers, helped by guest appearances from Cheech and Chong.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/Psychedelia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Psychedelia</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/AcidFolk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AcidFolk</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/NewWeirdAmerica" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewWeirdAmerica</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/music" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>music</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/MyHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MyHistory</span></a></p><p><a href="https://freemusicarchive.org/music/6majik9/In_Maras_Glove" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">freemusicarchive.org/music/6ma</span><span class="invisible">jik9/In_Maras_Glove</span></a></p>
