S.T. Veje<p>I know we're all gushing over Harris' pick of VP, not that other guy, but I read <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/HillbillyElegy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HillbillyElegy</span></a> by <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/JDVance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JDVance</span></a>. Surprisingly, I actually enjoyed it, not because I think Vance is a great guy with great ideas (anyone who'd associate with Trump has clearly lost touch with reality, if they ever had it), but because it's a perfectly enjoyable story with insights into the minds and problems of a certain subset of American society (not necessarily insights Vance himself would agree with).</p>

Flipboard Culture Desk<p>Trump's vice-presidential pick is J.D. Vance, the venture capitalist and Ohio senator who came to fame with his "Hillbilly Elegy" memoir in 2016. While the autobiography was a national bestseller, it was criticized by some Appalachians who said it generalized excessively, leaned on harmful stereotypes, relied on circular logic and more. Here's <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://flipboard.com/@Salon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>Salon</span></a></span> Jared Yates Sexton's 2017 piece about the book. "The message is loud and clear: Help is on the way, but only to those who 'deserve' it," he writes. "And how does one deserve it? By working hard. And the only metric to show that one has worked sufficiently hard enough is to look at their income, at how successful they are, because, in Vance’s and the Republicans' America, the only one to blame if you’re not wealthy is yourself."</p><p><a href="https://flip.it/wj.I11" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">flip.it/wj.I11</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/JDVance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JDVance</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/USPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/HillbillyElegy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HillbillyElegy</span></a> <a href="https://flipboard.social/tags/Books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Books</span></a></p><p>For more stories like this, follow Salon's Culture Magazine, <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://flipboard.com/@salon/culture-rrbbie5bz" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>culture-Salon</span></a></span>.</p>

Woodchaz<p>Has anyone here read <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/HillbillyElegy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HillbillyElegy</span></a>, by J.D. Vance and could give me a TDLR? I was intrigued, because some of what I heard sounded like some of my armchair theorizing, but I sort of don't want to read the book or watch the movie since Vance turned out to be a right wing bigot, which I'm not (very progressive Texan).</p>
