Woozle HypertwinOkay, we officially have terrible bus service here in <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/DurhamNC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#DurhamNC</a>.I just worked out that to get from Point A to Point B, which is a drive of less than 10 minutes or a bike-ride of a little over half an hour (about half on roads I wouldn't want to bike on), it would take nearly an hour during peak bus-service hours -- and the fastest route involves walking 1.2 miles (mostly without sidewalks) to get to a bus stop.There's a much closer stop near the top of the street, maybe 1/4 mile from here at Point A, with a sidewalk the whole way and frequent bus service -- but the only connection from there to the hourly bus that goes to Point B is downtown, so the whole trip takes (according to GMaps) 1 hour 22 minutes. (I suspect that goes up if you catch the first bus such that you arrive soon after the second bus has left.)I observed out loud that this might not be that terrible if one had a laptop on which to do work while riding but that B (who might want to take this trip on a semi-regular basis, thus giving him some more ability to get around without depending on car-rides) does not, alas -- and <a href="https://toot.cat/@Harena" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@Harena</a> observed that it probably wouldn't be safe anyway. Why, for example, aren't there any loop buses? (The answer is probably historical: a lot of US public transit was originally designed with an assumption that riders would live in the suburbs and work downtown.)
