My #dogwood tree is finally in bloom. It has been a family tradition to own Dogwoods. In #Appalachia, I've grown up by the time table of their blooms and #Easter.

The image shows a close-up of a single white flowering dogwood blossom. The blossom is the central focus, displaying four large, slightly overlapping, petal-like bracts that are a crisp white color. Each bract has a subtle veining pattern and a slightly notched or irregular edge. In the very center of the blossom is a cluster of small, yellowish-green true flowers forming a button-like shape.

The blossom is attached to a slender, brown twig that extends diagonally across the frame. Several vibrant green leaves surround the flower and twig. These leaves are oval-shaped with pointed tips and prominent veins running through them. The leaves have a smooth, slightly glossy texture.

The background is softly blurred, suggesting an outdoor setting with dappled light and possibly some out-of-focus foliage and a light brownish ground or mulch. The overall impression is one of delicate beauty and the fresh vibrancy of springtime.

This image shows a forest scene dominated by large, twisted vines or woody lianas wrapping around the trunk of a tree. Last Wednesday, an EF2 tornado landed 2 miles from my house (we are unharmed). This was followed by heavy rain and significant flooding (we are dry). A male American goldfinch looks patchy because he is molting into his summer feathers. When he is done, he will be neon yellow, with a black cap and black and white wings. Here, he scrutinizes his image in the water of the birdbath before taking a drink.

My cherry tree is blooming. It has pretty clusters of white flowers. It will provide food for birds, squirrels and raccoons.

We have many redbud trees in our yard. This photo shows many pink buds along a small branch. The buds will open in another week or two. The eastern redbud is a small tree, native to eastern North America. It's also known as the Judas tree because: 1) a legend states that Judas hanged himself from one of these trees*. The tree, which was tall and had white flowers, became stunted and the flowers turned red, either with shame or to honor the death of Jesus. 2) The redbud blooms around Easter, which is when Judas betrayed Jesus. [*the eastern redbud is native to North America and would not be found in the Middle East, but a related tree that looks similar grows there.]

06/04/2025 - A sunny day out to the city looking at trees. We visited the James Hutton Institute arboretum. It's not big but has a really fine selection of trees. It's home to the tallest tree in Aberdeen, a Sitka Spruce standing at 44 m.
