A suburb of Phoenix is not where one might expect to see a residential development based on emancipation from the dominion of the car.

Reducing car dependency in Arizona matters beyond the borders of the state. All too often those working for more human and environmentally sound planning and transit policies in the USA are met with a simplistic and thought stopping cry of "It might work in Europe, but our geography makes it impossible!"

The human carnage on the roads - "accidents" and road violence

"In Australia, a country with a terrible occurrence and societal acceptance of violent road deaths (would we, for example, be so lackadaisical about the death “toll” were we measuring killings, accidental and otherwise, involving knives or dogs or lawnmowers?), we are culturally imbued with notions of our “rights” rather than our “privileges” when it comes to motor vehicle driving. GORHAM (WGME) – "The Maine Turnpike Authority is now dropping its controversial Gorham connector project.

"The project would have built a new highway from South Portland to Gorham, with the goal of easing heavy road congestion.

"The MTA paused the project last year after receiving backlash from local residents.

"The project would have required the demolition of nearly a dozen homes and confiscation of #farmland."

"'There was a lot of concern, and people wondered if it's the right-sized tool for the job, a lot of people have concerns that, building another highway, there's concerns that it will just fill up,' MTA Director of Communications Erin Courtney said.

She uses the term “shadow places” to describe the ecosystems we exclude and exploit – including our forests and waterways – even though they are fundamental to our existence. These places provide essential labour, nourishment and the conditions we need to survive and flourish. For Plumwood, an expanded sense of “home” would encompass the broader ecological context we exist within."

I had a nice moment of literary kismet today; after @benbrown reminded me earlier this week that I've been meaning to re-read #WilliamGibson's '80s #cyberpunk #Sprawl trilogy for the first time since the books originally came out, today I came across a #FirstPrinting of 1988's #MonaLisaOverdrive for eleven bucks at #Powells in #Chicago's #HydePark (not affiliated with the much more famous store in Seattle). See image alt text for many more details. Now let's find the 1st Ed. of Neuromancer!

First printing of William Gibson's 1988 "Mona Lisa Overdrive," the third of the cyberpunk #Sprawl trilogy that helped first define this genre in the early 1980s. On its own, I'll list it at eBay for $30 just in case I get a taker, would accept up to $15, and with a resale value of only about $10; if I get first printings of the entire trilogy, then you're talking maybe $100 to 150 at eBay; $500 if all are signed too. More importantly for me, though, if I manage to live to 100 (no reason I wouldn't), I can just hold on to this patiently for another 50 years, and the trilogy at that point will be worth major dollars, probably a thousand or more even for unsigned. As a low-budget rare book collector, I mostly specialize in things you can still find at yard sales and used bookstores for $1 to 10 -- namely, Postmodernist novelists of the 1970s, '80s and '90s, especially women and people of color; '90s and '00s culture books on cyberpunk, Generation X, slam poetry, early web design, etc.; and hypermodern stuff people aren't even thinking of collecting yet (like the first printing I own of the "I Can Has Cheezburger?" paperback). If I collect it now when it's in pristine condition, then quietly store it on a shaded bookcase for the next 50 years, all of that stuff will be worth from the hundreds to the thousands per book.
