My little baby oak tree is about to burst into leaf. Squirrels bury acorns on my allotment and a few years ago I decided to pot one up. It stayed in the same pot for a long time and didn’t grow much then last year I repotted it and it absolutely shot up. Can’t wait to see what it does this year. #trees #oak #gardening

The first support I pulled was surprisingly intact. Some thickness gone around the buried part and completely waterlogged, but still very strong. It was oak! Amazing stuff.

Would've probably lasted another decade. I thought maybe I'm wasting my time here, but the other two were not oak and crumbled away when applying slight leverage, so it was high time to do this.

Gonna dry out that oak one and re-use it for something.

Solitaire

This was captured in February during the middle of winter.
Camped in Yosemite Valley a snow storm moved through the valley dumping about 8 inches of snow.
As I made my way through the village in the morning I saw this fabulous snow covered oak tree and decided it would make a good subject for a photo. It's not really solitaire but it did stand out from al the other trees around.

Three years ago, we found a tiny apricot tree sprouted from a kernel in the compost heap.
Planted it and cared for it. it now has its first fruit, about five little apricots!

This year's count of new oak trees from acorns hidden by squirrels is 12. Will be potted and given away next year when they can survive on their own.

Grape vine cutting has roots & leaves. By one, get many free, 😃.

First lavender is in full bloom. Lots of bees enjoying it. Pic later.

Ten "rescue" #oak seedlings I dug up and potted. They're volunteers from acorns that were stashed by scrub jays in litter beneath some Redwood trees. Some are Valley Oak. Others appear to be Coast Live Oak. From a strip of city easement land that gets whacked by city string trimmers every once in a while. Some bigger specimens (which i haven't "saved") show signs of having been whacked in the past. With any luck, these will recover from shock, and can be planted in approved sites.#trees

The Cellon Live Oak

"The Cellon Live Oak is a Florida Co-Champion Live Oak named for its former owner, Ralph W. Cellon. The oak's circumference is 30 feet, it is 85 feet tall and its crown spread is 160 feet."

It has an 80 foot horizontal "spider" trunk that lays on the ground creating a natural pergola. There's even a picnic table amidst the branches! (not shown) In the past dozen years or so this amazing limb was cracked (over my shoulder to the left in photo) and is now supported by large poles. Amazingly after such an injury it remains very much alive! 🙂
