So question for those in AV, live events, etc. out there (hoping for input/thoughts <3)

How on earth do you break into the industry when you've only had a few contracts ever plus a degree in the field?

"Who I know" hasn't been able to help me so far and when I've signed up as an ad hoc contractor kind of thing, no jobs ever came to my phone until they took me off their list >.>

I do this stuff on a volunteer basis but like...it'd be nice to get more experience and actually know how to get started after 5 years of banging my head against the wall. Particularly interested in live or studio audio stuff, but trained in the video side of things, lighting and enough logistics experience for the bump in/out stuff too

So yeah, how does one get started in this industry? Should I independently get any extra tickets/qualifications/etc.? And any other tags I could consider adding on to find the right place to ask? :3

The Nu Alliance Project, a partnership of Bvlbancha Public Access, Dillard University, and the The New Orleans Foundation for Francophone Culture, invites you to an free public evening celebration of the aesthetics and iconography of Indigenous and African cultures on Tuesday, Jan 21, 2025.

The project underscores the intricate relationships among Native American, and African-descended peoples in Louisiana. Through storytelling, art, and exchange, the Nu Alliance Project aims to transform cultural divides into bridges, honoring Black and Native heritage. The Wolof word ñu, meaning “we," and the ‘Uma word núah, meaning "to walk," aligns with the cultural interweaving born from forced migrations and shared histories of racism/colonialism. “Pattern Recognition,” seeks to create a transformative space where “we walk together.”

Big names like Daniel Radcliffe, Jeremy Strong and Angelina Jolie may have dominated the headlines from last night's Tony Awards. However, the Hollywood Reporter says the majority of prizes went to "titles with nary a celebrity in their cast." The biggest winner was "Stereophonic," which was named best play and also recognized for direction, scenic design, sound design, with a "Featured Actor in a Play" award for Will Brill. Here's more.

Live event coverage is getting better by the week. There was realtime coverage of the Apple announcements and it was 10x better than the last few big stories.

I follow a lot of hashtags and anyone that I find posts things that I am interested in. I’m slowly getting better with hashtags, but sometimes I just forget.

Thoughts on following Apple Event commentary on Mastodon/Activitypub

While watching Apple's WWDC Keynote on Monday I tried to follow the conversation on Mastodon and relive the "good old days" of Apple event commentary and snark on Twitter, and while the conversation was interesting, it wasn't always interesting for the right reasons.

Federated content from other instances was sometimes delayed. For example, @ismh seemed to be about 20 minutes behind, and @timbray seemed to be about 40, whereas there was zero delay for people on mastodon.social, or for @manton, (so presumably all of Micro.blog). I don't know if this happens because the instance I'm on sucks in posts from other instances at different speeds, or if the other instances make data available at different speeds, or something else.
