#Palestine / Study confirms reliability of Gaza Health Ministry death tolls contrasting Israeli discrepancies and lack of transparency
A recent analysis by Dr. Lee Mordechai, a senior lecturer in the Department of History at the Hebrew University, confirms the reliability of death toll data provided by the Palestinian Ministry of Health in #Gaza, despite challenges in data collection due to the ongoing conflict.
The study refutes claims made by the Henry Jackson Society (#HJS), a British think tank with a history of pro-Israel bias and questionable funding, which attempted to discredit the Ministry's figures.
The analysis highlights that the Ministry's detailed lists, including names, ID numbers, gender, and age, are easily verifiable and have been largely confirmed by Israel, which possesses a copy of Gaza's population registry. While acknowledging minor errors due to the chaotic conditions, the study emphasizes that these are negligible and that the Ministry's data is more reliable than the inconsistent and unsubstantiated figures provided by the Israeli military.
The Israeli occupation army claimed in September to have identified 10,000 militants among the fatalities, yet has released very few names. A #UN report indicates that by the end of April, with 34,000 Palestinian deaths, Israel claimed 13,000 were militants but had only published the names of 75. A #BBC investigation in late February also questioned the army's claims of 10,000 militants killed out of 30,000 Gazan deaths.
Furthermore, the study notes that international media outlets correctly prioritize the Ministry's data due to its transparency and verifiability.

#Israel / Honorary Doctorate for Genocidal Herzog at Hebrew University
The Hebrew University Senate held a contentious vote regarding awarding #Herzog an honorary doctorate. While 46 senators supported the proposal, 35 opposed and 12 abstained. The university claims the motion passed, but opponents argue it failed since the combined opposition and abstentions (47) exceeded supporters (46).
Some say Herzog failed to adequately oppose the "judicial overhaul," while others cite his consistent backing of higher education and academic freedom. The honorary degree was planned for June 2025, marking the university's centennial.
The #ICJ ruling against Israel quoted several genocidal statements made by Israeli officials — not just extremists on the right, but also President Herzog, who said: "It is an entire nation out there that is responsible... and we'll fight until we break their backbone."
The faculty's moral objections seem to be very selective. While they oppose awarding Herzog an honorary doctorate based on his perceived passivity during the judicial overhaul, they don't address his more direct and consequential role in #Israel's revenge war on #Gaza, including statements that the ICJ cited as potentially indicative of genocidal intent.
The Honorary degree discussions began in September 2023, before the current war on Gaza broke, but it also reflects Hebrew University's academic self-interest, as the judicial overhaul directly threatened academic freedom and institutional autonomy. It may also represent an attempt to steer away from controversial issues, since opposing the judicial overhaul is a relatively "safer" position within Israeli society than calling the war on Gaza a genocide.
