Chris Langford<p>Recently switched from <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/dwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dwm</span></a> to <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/fvwm3" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fvwm3</span></a> mostly out of just wanting to tinker/change the look/feel of my desktop. Not 100% sure I'm gonna stick with it and open to other options. What cool <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/WindowManagers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WindowManagers</span></a> are <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/x11" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>x11</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> folks using these days?</p>

Thomas Adam<p>Hmm. I’m sure this seemed like a good idea at the time. </p><p>I’m going to be adding another two monitors. Hence it’ll be six monitors overall. I’m sure this’ll be fine. No doubt I can claim fvwm randr testing. </p><p><a href="https://bsd.network/tags/fvwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fvwm</span></a> <a href="https://bsd.network/tags/fvwm3" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fvwm3</span></a></p>
Felix Palmen 📯<p>Deep down the <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/X11" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>X11</span></a> (<a href="https://techhub.social/tags/xcb" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>xcb</span></a>) rabbit hole now.</p><p>I decided to add a tray icon. I want it optional, with configurable behavior (minimize-to-tray, close-to-tray, no-tray).</p><p>Adding this thing was super simple with Qt. Getting anything other than the default behavior ... not so much. Doing lots of things with plain <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/xcb" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>xcb</span></a> now.</p><p>I'm stuck at hiding the tool from a taskbar. <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/EWMH" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EWMH</span></a> has _NET_WM_STATE_SKIP_TASKBAR. In <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/fvwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fvwm</span></a> (<a href="https://techhub.social/tags/fvwm3" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fvwm3</span></a>), this works when setting it before the window gets mapped. Sending it as a "client message" when the window is already mapped seems to be just ignored 😠 </p><p>I then tried <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/KDE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>KDE</span></a> (<a href="https://techhub.social/tags/kwin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kwin</span></a>). Hm well, doesn't even honor the _NET_WM_STATE property set on the window before mapping it, IOW, it's *always* shown in the taskbar.</p><p>WTF? 😖❓ </p><p><a href="https://techhub.social/tags/qxmoji" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>qxmoji</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/emoji" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>emoji</span></a> <a href="https://techhub.social/tags/keyboard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>keyboard</span></a></p>
Thomas Adam<p>I've just released <a href="https://bsd.network/tags/fvwm3" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fvwm3</span></a> version 1.0.9</p><p>For the main summary, see:</p><p><a href="https://github.com/fvwmorg/fvwm3/releases/tag/1.0.9" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/fvwmorg/fvwm3/relea</span><span class="invisible">ses/tag/1.0.9</span></a></p><p>Key features are (in no specific order):</p><p>* HTML documentation can now be generated with the `--enable-htmldoc` configure option.</p><p>* A new window style, `CornerLength` has been added to change the size of the handles on the corners of windows, in pixels.</p><p>* Rudimentary support for MacOS, in that it runs under XQuartz, but more testing is required to verify if all modules, etc., are working. (If anyone's interested in this, let me know).</p><p>* Monitors are now assigned a number in a specific order. See the blurb under "RANDR SUPPORT" in `man fvwm3all`. This should help with predictable configurations where monitor names differ, for example.</p><p>* The `EdgeScroll` command is now per-monitor aware.</p><p>There's also been plenty of little bug-fixes.</p><p>Thanks to everyone who's helped with this release, it's much appreciated.</p><p>Enjoy <a href="https://bsd.network/tags/fvwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fvwm</span></a> for as long as it lasts on the decaying <a href="https://bsd.network/tags/xorg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>xorg</span></a>. :)</p>
Thomas Adam<p>I'm fairly certain that <a href="https://bsd.network/tags/fvwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fvwm</span></a> specifically <a href="https://bsd.network/tags/fvwm3" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fvwm3</span></a> has seen its day in terms of features. Granted, some have argued that <a href="https://bsd.network/tags/fvwm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fvwm</span></a> had its day twenty years ago.</p><p>Maybe. 😊</p><p>But there's one final thing I want to do... And that is to realise a configuration syntax that mimics a CLI similar to tmux or cvs.</p><p>My initial design thoughts on this was to introduce a new parser into fvwm. I think that's pointless.</p><p>Better would be to make a client which transpiles its input into the current fvwm config syntax. </p><p>Working on it.</p><p>Oh, it'll be written in <a href="https://bsd.network/tags/rustlang" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rustlang</span></a>... I've even got <a href="https://bsd.network/tags/ferris" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ferris</span></a> helping me.</p><p>My fiancée made him for me...</p>
