I was at Carrs Mine at Nenthead today, tasked with more shale removal. The blockage here is reduced enough to enable people to walk through. The well engineered retaining wall on the left will allow safe public access in future.

After we finished, Pete asked if we wanted to explore further into the mine. This meant walking, through some deeper water, then on hands and knees and finally sliding through a shoulder wide gap, turning on to my side to get through. Not fun.

In a disused lead mine in the North Pennines, shale has fallen from above left, almost blocking access. There is a solid limestone roof and right hand side to the level. There is light from my helmet lamp.
Further back from the previous photo, there is a dry stone wall on the left to hold back loose shale from falling into the level. Just added is a new supporting wall of steel tubes and timber. These ensure that no loose shale can fall into the level. A man in red overalls is digging out the shale from the floor, filling trugs with the material.
