I’m leaving Alaska for a bit, but we had one last trip to see the wonder that this place provides.
We snowmachined back to a public use cabin on the outskirts of the Alaska range and vibed out for 2 days.
What we were treated to was a face melting view of 13,000ft peaks, untouched wilderness and absolutely awe inspiring aurora. I love Alaska but this may be my last winter here as it’s just not as profitable in winter work.
But I’ve spent years now with my neck strained looking up at the glory that explodes above us in the sky. But it may be time to spend some time elsewhere for the winter.

It’s amongst these rocks I used to play a lot as a kid. Somewhere along the shoreline there is—or was at least until the rocks had to be moved to make way for a new pier, boat landing, or something like that—a small pool formed by the rocks and the lake water, where water used to get trapped when it rained. I still remember it being this magical little lake next to a lake type of thing and it was where I sailed with my tree bark boats and what not. I even had this Action Man figure that could swim and I made him swim there a bit. It feels like an eternity ago.

This is on the same island my grandpa built the pier on, and I’ve always thought that while he was an entrepreneur who somewhat failed in all his business ventures to some degree after leaving his stable job as an insurance salesman, there are at least two things he succeeded in: raising a family with empathy and kindness, and picking the spot for the family summer cabin. That island is a beautiful paradise.

A view along a rocky lake shoreline with rocks ranging from huge to the more smaller ones. The sun is setting in the background and you can see some islands in the distance as well on the lake, that take up a big portion of the left hand side of the picture. There are also green trees on the right and the sky has a lot of torn cumulus clouds that look like they might rain down if they so please. The lake is calm with only slight ripples and it’s a serene view that you could just stare for ages and be happy. It doesn’t show in the picture, but I remember that day being very warm, but not too hot—the perfect summer evening.
