Evergreen huckleberries (Vaccinium ovatum) are blooming. This hardy native is evergreen, and used by wise people for hedges. Its blue huckleberries are very small but usually abundant, and tasty!

Flowering quince on lichen and moss covered shrubs.

I reached into one and it bit me.

Some coral red blossoms on a flowering quince share branches with some different lichens and moss. The lichens are fruticose and sage green (reindeer lichen?), gray and foliose, and yellow and crustose. The flowers are bright and cheery, mostly partially opened, with 5 petals and yellow stamens poking out.

Honey scented tall Oregon grape is in bloom all over the park. Everything this spring is blooming like mad!

A branch of Oregon grape pokes between two shaded mossy fence rails. The branch has a few racemes of small bright yellow cup like flowers. The dark leaves on the branch look a bit like holly, with prickly edges. A ray of sunshine strikes the leaves, leaving shadows on the bottom rail.

Japanese maples leaves deploy in a garden. The palmate leaves start out red, and as the spread open, the greens start as chartreuse, with red edges, and then a more tender green as they age, and stronger greens as they get ready to photosynthesize for the season. In this photo the young red rimmed leaves fan out at the top, then the greener leaves swirl below, and you can see older leaves lower towards the ground.

Amelanchier x grandiflora, downy serviceberry, has beautiful pink to white flowers and downy sage colored stems. It's a lovely, unusual looking small street tree which has a showy display of vivid colors in fall.

Green and purple hellebores in front of the local Catholic school.

A small clump of 5 petaled hellebore flowers with purple shading grace the front of a school building. They have purple stems and are growing among small succulent groundcover plants.

The petals are technically sepals, something of interest only to botanists and flower specialists. I just now learned that most species of hellebores have flowers that face downwards. If you want to see their pretty markings, it's best to plant them where they'll be at eye height.

A multi-petaled star magnolia flower opens on a cool spring day. The bottom of the petals are tinted light pink, but the rest are a fine French vanilla color. Time for ice cream! There are buds next to the flower, looking like little brown fuzzy mice. One bud is starting to open into another vanilla blossoms.

This one day a year and a half ago we went to the beach during a tropical depression and upon coming back from a little walk, noticed someone stuck a sunflower into the sand and it just stood tall and proud. Sometimes, you gotta be a sunflower plopped in the sand standing tall and proud, regardless of what storm is crashing up on your shores
