Another volume of Rev John Newton's previously unpublished diary is now available - this one for 1767. John Newton was curate at Olney from 1764-1779. He wrote the hymn - Amazing Grace whilst at Olney. He had a wide circle of friends in the area including Northampton. 1767 was particularly significant as that year he invited the poet William Cowper to Olney.

@sim @icedquinn @sevvie @apropos @hakui Yeah frankly I wouldn't have known about that (my history education was good but I don't remember much of it because I thought it was boring at the time) but my dad bought the movie #AmazingGrace and I looked up the true story afterwards.

But I guess in the #USA they're more likely to focus on #USA history than history of other nations so it *kinda* makes sense. Although the fact that the abolition movement began in earnest in #Britain, not the #USA, is a pretty big deal.
