Was on a call this morning about climate MIPs and realized I have IDEAs because people are #DoingItWrong. I hope there is climate funding in the US to submit them too in the next two or three years. Always surprises me how motivating "No you are doing that wrong... here just let me do it" is for research projects. #Research #AcademicLife

Taught a bonus lecture for a course on Algorithms for NP-hard Problems today. Material won't be on the exam, so technically, this lecture was "just for fun".
Quite some pressure to make coming to class on Friday morning 8:45am worth it for a gang of 20-year-olds.
Students were a hoot. They were listening actively and participating. Great to meet them. Had a blast 
Afterwards, some of them thanked me for the "really great lecture" 
Ab-so-lute-ly exhausted now.
We did it! We selected the 61 best students from the overall more than 100 applications. Due to always possible visa issues and other unfortunate circumstances for late cancellations, we've also created a waiting list for potential additional candidates. Congratulations to all of you!!

Not a great morning as woke up to very disappointing news about a paper, that I'll now have to submit to another publisher. Considering a) the extra work involved and b) many publishers now give all their content to AI companies, this thought does not fill me with enthusiasm. Another nail in the coffin of my academic life I think.
Deadline was closing on Mach 25, 2025. With more than 100 applications the admittance decision process for the 60 accepted students will be hard. We'll keep you posted. Notifications will be out soon!

En 2025, il est toujours aussi répandu et habituel d'attendre des mois sa rémunération quand on est vacataire dans une université française.
Plusieurs années après la circulaire de 2017 et la Loi de programmation sur la recherche de 2020 prévoyant le versement mensuel de la rémunération des vacations, il est scandaleux et honteux que cette situation soit toujours aussi répandue.
Avant mon départ au Canada, j'avais goûté à ces difficultés - une des raisons ayant pesé dans la balance au moment de choisir l'expatriation.

- I tried something new in my lecture at the last minute and it actually worked really well!
- I enjoyed being the guest speaker at the Inclusive UC Challenge event launch (a Uni of Canterbury social challenge for students - this year they are tasked with designing an inclusive event, which is what I’m passionate about)
- I had a nice but slow walk home in the last of the sunny warmth after a big day!
Spent a lot of the day word smithing 400 word abstract for the bone research society meeting in Edinburgh this June. The deadline crept up on me. Still not 100% happy with it, but fingers crossed. #academiclife
