Viking life wasn't as exciting as today's media tries to tell us - when not discovering (or raiding) other countries, most Viking people were simple people where the men were in charge of all doing outside the house (farming, crafting etc.) while the women were often bound to the houses's threshold, taking care of the duties at home.

Bork Vikingehavn in Denmark shows the life of the Norse people in all of its variety, beside the murdering, looting and plundering "wilds of the North" that TV wants to make us believe these days!

Hel (Old Norse Hel, “Hidden”) is a giantess and/or goddess who rules over the identically-named Hel, the underworld where many of the dead dwell. Her name’s meaning of “Hidden” surely has to do with the underworld and the dead being “hidden” or buried beneath the ground.
According to the thirteenth-century Icelandic scholar Snorri Sturluson, Hel is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda (Old Norse Angrboða, “Anguish-boding”), and therefore the sister of the wolf Fenrir and the world serpent, Jormungand. This makes her part of a highly dangerous and disreputable family.

It is said that when Ragnarök comes, Fenrir will break the binding upon him and run through the world, devouring all in his path. He would devour the sun and the moon while the battle raged and would ultimately devour Odin himself. He would then be killed by Odin’s son, Viðarr, and not return for the next cycle.
