In 1855 there was a cholera outbreak in Bologna. There were about 70,000 people living in the city with tens to hundreds of people being affected by cholera every day. (On the 12 July there were 169 cases alone registered).
The plaque reads:
"Addi' 22 luglio 1855
In questa via cesso' il morbo cholera
Per grazie di Maria"

On the day of the 22nd of July 1855

“Achat de Chevaux” — A mosaic featuring the image of a red horse on an old Paris shop.

As usual, I made the photo while thinking of it purely as a visual object, and only later did I stop to wonder about what it meant and why it might be there. I’m still a little bit confused about it. Some poking around on the internet offered a couple of translations of the words. They are literally, as I understand it, “purchase of horse.” One writer suggests that it might mean that a former business purchased horses.
